Confederacy, Columbia S.C., Aug 30, blue double-circle datestamp with matching "Paid" and "10" rating handstamp on adversity use of orange "Post Office Business, Free." imprint envelope to Pickens C.H., S.C.; original 1863 datelined letter from J.H. Marshall enclosing a check and mentions "Tell Lt. … that he will find the pocket book & papers of Dr. Grant the prisoner, in the lower part of the book case."; imprint and postmaster address crossed out causing some restored erosion at top right, F.-V.F.

Confederacy, "Feasterville, November 27", manuscript postmark and matching "Paid 10" rating on adversity cover made from printed form to Dogwood Neck PO, S.C.; some light overall aging, accompanied by half of C.S.A. Post Office Dept. check payment signed by Postmaster General "John H. Reagan", split horiz.; and Nov. 28th 1861 Post Office Department part-printed signed form from Finance Dept. with instructions for quarterly reports and route "5678" contract, F.-V.F.

John Thomas McConnell, Black Mingo Rifles, Georgetown S.C.; inside use bearing 10¢ blue (12) tied by "Black Mingo S.C., Apr" balloon-style cds to Barnwell C.H., S.C.; accompanied by Graniteville S.C. stampless "Paid" and ms. "5" rating cover proving the Graniteville origin, Very Fine and rare unlisted Confederate way use.

Confederacy, "Green Pond, May 2nd", manuscript postmark and matching pen strokes cancel each stamp of 5¢ green (1) horizontal pair, on blue cover to Richmond Va., forwarded with "Richmond Va., May 20, 1862" cds and framed "Forwarded 5" and additional "Due 5" handstamps to Bufords Bridge S.C.; small erosion hole and some light gum toning, otherwise Very Fine and scarce forwarded use.

Confederacy, Limestone Springs S.C., Jul 1, cds with matching "PAID 5" rating handstamp on 1861 cover to Allendale S.C., original June 30th 1861 letter from student at the Limestone Springs Female College no longer accompanies, also includes post-war stampless use; small edge tear and tone spot, F.-V.F. and unlisted in CSA catalog.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

This Limestone Springs "Paid 5" rating handstamp is the same marking used to make the 121X1 provisional stamps. All known covers with the provisional do not have a cds, but this cover proves it did exist.
