Three examples from this location are known both are shown in this listing. To this day students are not sure if this mark is from the town of Needles (California) or from the railhead on the east side of the Colorado River (Arizona) which was located at the base of the "The Needles Mountains".

It is speculated that the blue frank designated special carriage on the Sacramento River steamboats, because Wells Fargo's handstamped "Steamboat" markings cease to appear at just the time when the blue franks came into use.
