Cathlamet, W.T. "Aug 18th 1863" (Wahkiacum), unusual arch postmark with manuscript dating (type 2, 10 known) on 3¢ pink (U35) buff entire cancelled by matching radial to Dallas, Oregon, Very Fine.

Lot 736    

"Columbia City, W.T. July 25th" (Clark), manuscript postmark and matching "10" rating on folded letter datelined "Columbia Barracks W.T., Vancouver, Oregon. July. 23rd 1853" to Watertown N.Y.; some stains, Fine and very early Washington Territory use, ex-Persson.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The Columbia City Post Office, which was the forerunner of The Vancouver Post Office, operated for five years only 1850-1855. The town was originally part of Oregon Territory until March 2, 1853 when Washington Territory was officially formed. This is a very early Washington Territory use.

Conconully, Wash. T. Aug 7, 1889 (Okanogan), cds duplex wit four-ring target cancel on 1¢ postal card (UX9) with preprinted address to Tacoma, Washington Terr., F.-V.F., One of only three recorded territorial usages..

The Conconully post office in Okanogan County did not open until 1888, very late in the territorial period.

"Coveland WT., April 20/1874", manuscript postmark with matching pen strokes cancelling 3¢ green (147) on cover to Capt. H. Roeder, Whatcom, Wash. Terr.; reduced at left with tiny stain, F.-V.F., This is the earliest recorded use from the third time period, the only manuscript example., ex-Persson.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The Coveland post office territorial DPO was open during three territorial periods of 1857-61, 1861-64 and 1870-81.

"Covello Wash, 1/7/84" (Columbia), manuscript postmark with matching "X" cancelling 2¢ red brown (210) on light buff cover to Philadelphia Pa., Very Fine, One of only two recorded manuscript postmark uses, which are the earliest recorded uses., ex-Persson.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY WASHINGTON TERRITORY USE, WHICH WAS FORMED ON MARCH 2, 1853.

Cowlitz postmarks are recorded from October 22nd 1851 when part of Oregon Territory.

"Curlew Wash Terr., 8-8-85" (Spokane), manuscript postmark with matching cross-hatch on 1¢ postal card (UX7) with preprinted address to General Land Agent N.P.R.R. Co., Portland, Oregon, Very Fine and choice, The only recorded use from this shortlived Territorial DPO.

Curlew post office in Spokane County was open only from 1884-1888.

Jul 1, 1887 (Whatcom), clear strike of cds on registered cover with 1¢ gray blue (206) horizontal pair, 2¢ red brown (210) and 10¢ brown (209), all tied by three four-ring cancels on cover with printed address to Boston Mass., partial purple Boston Mass. Registry (1.12) arrival oval; some wear and wrinkling, 2¢ torn, F.-V.F., One of only four recorded territorial post office uses, the earliest of three cds strikes.
