(Calaveras) Mok(ulumne) Hill, Cal., Jun 10, manuscript postmark (CAL-1590) on folded letter to Monterey with fancy manuscript "5" rate, with "San Francisco, Cal., Jun 14" transit cds and matching "5" rate handstamp, with letter datelined "Jesus Maria, June the 9th, 1852" (small mining camp in the southern mother lode), Very Fine, an interesting and unusual early postal routing, pictured in Coburn Letters of Gold (page 36).

(Calaveras) Murphy's, Cal., Sep 14, blue forwarding cds (CAL-1890, R5) on incoming cover, with "Port Republic, Va." origin cds with matching "Paid" and "5" handstamps, forwarded to San Francisco with additional manuscript "Forwd 5" rating; expertly repaired backflap tears, Very Fine.

Lot 76    

(Calaveras) Murphy's, Cal, Jul 23, two strikes of blue postmark (Williams CAS-1920) on 1865 cross-border buff cover to Pennfield, New Brunswick bearing 2¢ black (73), 3¢ rose (65), s.e. and 10¢ green (68), all cancelled by matching blue target cancels paying the 15¢ West Coast rate, reverse with St. Stephen (9.4.1865) and St. George (9.5) transits; reduced at right, F.-V.F. and rare destination from California with a three-color 1861-66 issue franking, ex-Seybold.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

(Calaveras) North Branch, Cal., Oct 13th, rimless cds with manuscript date (CAL-2110, R5) on cover to Lynn, Mass., matching straight line "Paid" and "6" rate handstamps, missent to Lowell and forwarded with rimless cds, 1853 year docketing at left; cover wear and right portion of backflap mostly absent, F.-V.F. and attractive.

(Calaveras) Pleasant Springs, Cal., Oct 2, cds (CAL-2200) on cover to Bradford, Me., franked with ample margin 1851, 10¢ green, type III canceled be manuscript, with original contents datelined 1857, Very Fine, the only known example of Pleasant Springs first type postmark, ex-Polland and Tatham.

(Calaveras) Poverty Bar, Cal., June 28, manuscript postmark (CAL-2220, R5) on manuscript canceled 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Ione Valley; side flaps and portion of left edge restored with portions of postmark drawn in, Very Fine appearance, an extremely rare manuscript postmark, one of only two examples recorded (photo on web site).

(Calaveras) Reynolds Ferry, Cal., Apr 30th, 1859, manuscript postmark (CAL-2300) on cover to Fifteen Mile House on the Mokelumne Hill Road (Foreman's Ranch), franked with uncanceled 1857, 3¢ dull red (s.e. at right), Very Fine, the only known postmark from Reynolds Ferry, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 316), ex-Myerson.
