1861 (Aug. 21) New Orleans, La., Confederate States of America to Limbach, Saxony, folded letter with "N. York Hamb. Pkt. '5' Sep 7" debit exchange cds, carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from New York Sep. 7th to Hamburg arriving Sep. 23rd, Hamburg (9.23) backstamp and "6½" sbr. debit rating handstamp, Saxony blue manuscript "6 5/10" neugroschen due rating, Limbach (9.24) arrival backstamp, heavy vertical file fold, Fine, A very scarce Confederate period transatlantic cover since New Orleans was recaptured by Federal forces in early 1862., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Letter originated in Confederate New Orleans during the Civil War. Effective June 1, 1861 postal service between the North and South was suspended. This letter was carried privately (probably through the lines by some unknown express service) to New York where it was posted unpaid to Saxony. New York debited Hamburg 5¢. Hamburg showed 6½ silbergroschen postage due, which Saxony changed in blue crayon to 6 5/10 neugroschen.

1861 (Sep. 7) New York, N.Y. to Leipzig, Saxony, red "C.A. Zoebisch & Sons, Musical Instruments, New York" oval cameo corner card cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) and 12¢ black (36), each tied by NYFM red circular open grid, matching indistinct strike of New York Hamb. Pkt. "Paid 10" exchange cds, carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from New York Sep. 7th to Hamburg arriving Sep. 23rd, reverse with Hamburg (9.23) transit cds and Sep. 24th arrival cds; 3¢ small flaws from edge placement, otherwise Very Fine and attractive use, ex-Gabriel.

1861 (Oct. 18) New York N.Y. to Mittenwalde, Bavaria, blue folded letter bearing three 5¢ buff (67) singles, bright shade, each cancelled by NYFM red circular open grid cancel, matching partial red "N.York, Hamb. Pkt. 'Paid 10' Oct 19" credit exchange cds, carried as endorsed by Hapag Line Bavaria from New York Oct. 19th to Hamburg arriving Nov. 4th; two 5¢ affected by file folds, upper right tied by docketing, otherwise Very Fine and pretty 5¢ buff 1861 use.

'Paid 10' 16 Nov" credit exchange cds, carried by Hapag Borussia from New York Nov. 16th to Hamburg arriving Dec. 2nd, Hamburg (12.3) oval transit and Ebingen (12.4) arrival cds; 10¢ top corner flaws and some edge wear, otherwise Very Fine and attractive 5¢ brown yellow 1861 issue use; with 2008 P.F. certificate.

Pkt., Nov. 28" credit exchange cds, carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from New York Nov. 28th to Hamburg arriving Dec. 12th, Hamburg (12.13) transit backstamp and neat "Franco" handstamp, Vienna (11.15) arrival backstamp; some light waterstaining at sides, 12¢ small tear at top right, Very Fine appearance, ex-Matthies, Allen, McCracken.
