China, 1825 (Mar. 30) Canton, China to Providence R.I. via Portsmouth N.H., folded letter datelined "Canton March 30th 1825", carried by private ship entering the mails with red rimless "Portsmouth N.H., Sept 9" oval and matching "Ship" handstamp with red ms. "27" rating for 25¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, docketed received "Sept 10" indicating over 5 months in transit; tone spots and vertical tear, paper brittle and separated in pieces needing reattachment, Fine and very early ship use from Canton to the United States via Portsmouth N.H.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Letter reports on the sale of adventure goods onboard the Ann & Hope including coils of rope, boxes of cordials, cologne etc. The enclosure also lists the invoice for goods purchased for the return trip of the Ann & Hope, including Chests of Tea (Imperial Tea, Young Hyson Tea, etc.), Ivory Carved Fans, etc. Also shows the exchange rate of 72 Candarins per Dollar.

China, 1834 (Nov. 29) Macao to Canton, China, folded letter datelined "Macao, Nov 29, 1834" to Moses Wetmore with "10 Cents" endorsed on flap, interesting letter from F. Bainbridge being destitute and begging for help for return to the United States, "…I was told that no Capt would take me on any terms…I am here destitute, and alone, am penniless, and without any means of getting away…I shall be put into prison…", Very Fine.

China, 1834 (Dec. 5) Macao to Canton, China, folded letter datelined "Macao 5th December 1834" to Moses Wetmore with request by F. Bainbridge for payment enclosed boarding bill from Henry Hyndman and $100 for passage to the United States, flap with Chinese directional characters, Very Fine and scarce early Macao use.

China, 1835 (Jun. 4) Canton, China to Philadelphia Pa. via New York, folded letter from the Whetmore & Co. correspondence to partner Joseph Archer datelined "Canton, June 4th 1835", endorsed per Ship "Tarquin" at bottom left, entered mails with red "New-York, Dec 30" cds and matching "SHIP" straightline with ms. "39½" rating for 37½¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Some interesting market reporting concerning tea and depressed local market for inbound goods, the need to borrow $90,000 with $80,000 in bills on hand which seem to be hard to exchange, "…The Tarquin will commence loading today & from all we can learn think she will not have, to exceed 4000 chests of Teas, of which 2000 at least will be Young Hysons…The Franklin has gone to Manila for a cargo of Rice, & will return here for a cargo of Teas which have been purchased by us for here…Our neighbors have been greatly disappointed in consequence of their inability to execute their orders for Teas. We estimate the following will be about the quantity of Teas that will be shipped before the new come into market to the United States by vessels now here viz: Tarquin 4000 Chests of which 2000 Y Hyson; Mary 4500; Regulus 7500; Franklin 6000…These vessels will take every chest remaining of the present crop…" and signed "Wetmore & Co."

China, 1835 (Jun. 13) Canton, China to Philadelphia Pa. via New York, folded letter datelined "Canton, June 13th 1835" from the Whetmore & Co. correspondence to partner Joseph Archer, endorsed per Ship "Tarquin" at bottom left, entered mails with red "New-York, Dec 30" cds and matching "SHIP" straightline with ms. "52" rating for 50¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee; some writing bleed through and horizontal file fold, F.-V.F.

Some interesting market reporting concerning tea shipments and recent sailings, includes "The Presidents Message respecting France for the lateness of the Tarquin, are the principal inducements for giving the Teas to the latter vessel…also comparative statement of the Export of teas to this date, throwing the total Export to be 167,320 chests - The Tarquin will probably be the last vessel this season…Sales of British manufactures are at a stand…" and signed "W.S. Wetmore".

Brewster, Hinghua City, China corner card wrapper, Chinese "Shanghai, 8 Oct 99" transit cds; wrapper opened for display splitting the ½c pair, F.-V.F. and rare wrapper use with Foochow tie-print to the United States.
