(Alpine) Silver Mountain, Cal. Dec 3, bold double-circle datestamp with matching cork cancels on 2¢ black (73) pair and 10¢ green (68) strip of four and two singles, on 1868 reduced legal-size yellow cover front to London, England, red New York, Paid All, Dec 13" exchange cds and London Paid (12.29.68) arrival cds, original tissue paper letter accompanies; small flaws, Fine and striking use.

(Butte) Forbestown, Cal. Sep 12, red cds on circa 1859 yellow cover bearing 5¢ brown (29) horizontal pair, trimmed perfs at top, tied by smudged manuscript cancel to Groton Mass., endorsed "Overland Via Los Angeles" at left; minor edge wear, otherwise Very Fine and scarce 5¢ 1857 Issue use from California.

(Calaveras) Pleasant Springs, Cal., Oct 2, cds (CAL-2200) on cover to Bradford, Me., franked with ample margin 1851, 10¢ green, type III canceled be manuscript, with original contents datelined 1857, Very Fine, the only known example of Pleasant Springs first type postmark, ex-Polland and Tatham.

(Calaveras) Railroad Flat, Cal., May 11th 1857, neat manuscript postmark (CAL-2240, R5) with pen cancel on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Sacramento, with original enclosure; upper right corner nick, otherwise Very Fine, the only first period usage recorded.

(Kern) Delano, Cal., March 28, blue manuscript postmark (KER-1030) tying 3¢ Banknote on cover to Vineyard Haven, Mass., 1876 docketing on reverse, Very Fine, very scarce, with known usages between March 28 and June 18 of 1876.

(Kern) Keysville, Cal., Sept 1st, 1866, manuscript postmark (Williams "no postmarks recorded") on cover to Masonville, W.V., franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 3¢ rose; stamp flaws and cover wear, Fine, the only known Keysville postmark during the Kern county period.

(Kern) Linn's Valley, Aug 8, manuscript postmark (KER-2380, R5) on manuscript canceled 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, notation on reverse confirming 1870 usage, couple opening tears at upper right, F.-V.F., very rare with only three examples recorded.

(Kern) Rose's Station, Cal., Jul 29, cds (KER-3640, R5) canceling on 1874, 3¢ green entire to Newhall, forwarded to Gorman's Station with 1881 Bakerville transit backstamp; rough opening at right into indicia, Fine and rare, the latest of only a few known, Rose's Station was formerly Tejon.

Lot 584    

(Kern) Tehachipo, Cal., Jun 2 1873, bold cds (KER-4100) with last letter "O" in town name and "3" in 1873 penned in, on 1870, 3¢ green entire to San Francisco canceled by negative star in circle handstamp, Very Fine, the finer of two known Tehachipo postmarks, both bearing manuscript corrections.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

During the first period the Tehachipi post office was opened (1869-85) the postal marking named changed four times. From Tehachipah, to Tehachipa, then Tehichipa and finally Tehichipi. The 1872 Tehachipah postmark was short-lived and by 1873 the "AH" at the end of name was removed from the postmark (creating this Williams KER-4100 postmark). Later, after the office changed to Greenwich, the office (and town name) then became Tehachapi.
