The Amargo post office was located on the Las Virgenes Ranch, seven miles east of Newbury Park.

Named for Horace Gasquet, who settled here in the 1850's. He was the first postmaster and operated a stage coach stop.

Cal., Feb 13, 1894 (Calaveras), purple cds and grid duplex (CAL-1980) canceling on 2¢ Columbian entire to New York, with second cover bearing similar "Murphy, Calaveras Co. Cal., Feb 5, 1895" cds and grid duplex (CAL-1990) with "S" dropped from "Murphys", tying 2¢ Bureau on corner card cover to Coulterville, returned to sender with numerous transit backstamps, a Very Fine duo, both scarce short-lived postmarks and both the latest recorded.Estimate $150 - 200.

The Quartsburg post office officially opened on October 7, 1851 although it already was in operation during the middle of that year. This postmark from a little over a month after the official opening is the earliest by far, with Williams recording a February 1853 manuscript postmark as the earliest.
