Lot 952    

1834 (Jul. 20) India to Pittsburg, Pa. via Philadelphia, folded cover with partial letter from Rev. J.C. Lowrie while missionary in India, carried by private ship entering U.S. mails with red "Phila. 8 Dec" octagon datestamp and matching Full-Rigged Ship octagon handstamp with red manuscript "20¾" rating for 18¾¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Rev. John Cameron Lowrie (1808-1900) was appointed in 1832 by Western Foreign Missionary Society to open a mission in India. With Mr. & Mrs. William Reed, sailed from Philadelphia May 30, 1833, arriving in Calcutta Oct. 15th with his wife dying Nov. 21st. He carried on determined to found a mission station in some unoccupied area, finally reaching Lodiana Nov. 5th 1834. Broken by poor health and his bereavement of his wife's death, he returned to the U.S. in 1836.

1868 (Jun. 8) Newark, N.J. to Hamburg, Germany, orange cover bearing 5¢ brown (76) pair tied by blue cork cancels, matching "Newark, N.J., Jun 8" cds, red "New York, Paid All, Direct, Jun 9" exchange cds, carried by HAPAG Line Teutonia from New York Jun. 9th to Southampton arriving Jun. 24th, red "Hamburg, Franco" (6.24) framed arrival, Very Fine and choice use.

1815 (Apr. 15) Bergen, Norway to Providence, R.I. via London and New York, folded cover docketed from "Herman D. Johnson & Sons, Bergen dated 15th April", endorsed "p Acastus" at lower left to London, reverse with "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter London, 9 JU 9, 1815" double-circle datestamp across flaps and manuscript "2/1" 2s1d rating, endorsement updated by ship "P. Rolla", red "New-York, Aug 29" cds and and matching "Ship" handstamp with manuscript "78½" rating (3 x 17¢ plus 50% war rate surcharge + 2¢ ship fee), Very Fine and choice London withdrawn ship letter use from Norway.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

The Act of October 10th 1814, made it illegal to place an outbound letter on any ship privately, unless the letter had first been presented to the British Post Office and a fee paid equal to one-third of the combined inland and sea packet postage. Upon payment, the letter received the "Withdrawn Ship Letter" handstamp and the sender was allowed to send the letter by any ship of his choice. In that the Post Office was providing no service at all for this little used and unpopular act, it as terminated on July 11th 1815.

1844 (Aug. 9) Naples, Sicily to Philadelphia Pa. via London, folded letter entered mails with Marseilles (8.14) entry cds, red London (8.20) datestamp with manuscript "1/3" paid by agent and reposted to Philadelphia with red manuscript "1/-" shilling packet fee prepaid, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Liverpool Sep. 4th to Boston arriving Sep. 17th, Philadelphia "20¾" (the "/4" is red crayon), Very Fine, ex-Winter.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

A SCARCE EXAMPLE OF THE PHILADELPHIA 20¾ RATE HANDSTAMP STRUCK IN RED, ONLY NINE RECORDED EXAMPLES.

Letter carried by ship to Marseilles, where it entered French mail system. At London, forwarding agent Heath, Furse & Co. (handstamp on reverse) paid 1s3d for ¼-½ oz letter, crossed thru their name in the address, and paid 1s packet postage to U.S. Letter rated at Philadelphia and not at arrival port of Boston. Postage due consisted of 2¢ ship fee plus 18¾¢ U.S. inland fee from Boston to Philadelphia. Italicized version of Philadelphia rate stamp in red quite scarce since color shifted to blue soon after its was introduced. Red strikes are recorded from June 1844 to October 1844.

"Special Arrangement" with the Liverpool Postmaster

Businessmen in Philadelphia and other eastern cities complained about delays in mail arriving via Boston, due to sorting and rating. After an 1843 request to the Liverpool Postmaster by the U.S. Postmaster General, from June 1844 to late 1848 mails to Philadelphia and ten other cities were made up in separate parcels in Liverpool. These were included in the New York bag, from where they were forwarded un-postmarked.

Philadelphia's 20¾ and circled 12 postmarks were obtained specifically for incoming British mails arriving via Boston under the Postmaster General's special arrangement with the Liverpool Postmaster.

1845 (Dec. 30) Philadelphia Pa. to Paris, France, folded cover with blue "Philadelphia Pa. Dec 30" cds with matching "Paid" and "10" rating handstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Acadia from Boston Jan. 1st to Liverpool arriving Jan. 14th, red London (1.16) backstamp and matching "Colonies/&c.Art.12" framed h.s., red Boulogne (1.18) entry cds with manuscript "15" decimes due rating, fresh and Very Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Mails from this voyage reached London on January 16, 1846. This is the latest recorded use of the "Colonies/&c.Art.12" marking on mails from the United States.

The combination of the U.S. 5¢ and 10¢ internal rates and the "Colonies/&c.Art.12" marking was possible during a period of only about six and one half months. Less than 6 examples have been recorded.

1847 (Aug. 14) Boston Mass. to Paris, France, gray folded cover with red "Boston, 5 cts, 14 Aug" integral exchange cds with matching "Paid" handstamp, carried on the Herout & Handel Line Philadelphie maiden voyage from New York Aug. 15th to Cherbourg arriving Sep. 1st, clear strike of blue framed "Paq. Reg." entry handstamp, blue Paris arrival backstamp, Very Fine and choice French Packet Direct mail from the short-lived Herout & Handel Line.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This was the second of only nine sailings of the Herout & Handel line and the only sailing to use the "Paq. Reg" handstamp.

1848 (Jun. 7) New Orleans, La. to Winnenden, Wurttemberg, datelined folded letter with "New Orleans, La. Jun 7" cds and matching "Paid" straightline and slanted "10" rating handstamps, red "New-York, Jun 16" exchange backstamp and bold "24" debit handstamp; carried by Ocean Line Hermann from New York Jun. 20th to Bremerhaven arriving Jul. 6th; black "America/uber Bremen" exchange handstamp and red "10 1/3." debit handstamp; various manuscript postal ratings including Wurttemberg red crayon "1.f 13" (1fl. 22kr.) final due rating, Very Fine and scarce use under the Bremen Postal Treaty of 1847, Carried on the first of Five Voyages under the Bremen Postal Treaty of 1847.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The Hannover post in Bremen debited Hannover 9 gutegroschen, a restatement of the 24¢ U.S. debit. Hannover marked 10 1/3 ggr. debit to Thurn & Taxis Post, later marked as 45 kr. Thurn & Taxis Post added 24 kr. transit fee to Württemberg and wrote the total as "1/9" for 1 florin 9kr. Winnenden added 4kr delivery fee for final total due of "1f13" (1 florin 13 kr).

ONE OF THREE OUTGOING COVERS PAYING THE 34¢ RETALIATORY RATE.

Only 7 strikes of the Philadelphia small "34" retaliatory handstamp are recorded, with only three in blue.
