Transit, Nov 26" exchange cds, red "Verviers-Coeln Franco, 8/12" four-line exchange, Kusel (12.9) arrival backstamp; reduced slightly at right, otherwise Very Fine and attractive.

1869 (May 24) Lima, Peru to Downieville, Cal., cover with "Legation of the United States of America, Lima, Perú" corner card and manuscript "Alvin P. Hovey, U.S. Minister" endorsement, entered mails with "San Francisco, Cal. Jun 12" cds with "Steam Panama" oval and bold "10" cent steamship due handstamp, with original matching May 24th 1869 "Legation U.S.A. Lima, Perú" letterhead enclosure signed by Hovey; cover faults and separations reinforced, F.-V.F. and scarce legation use.

1869 (Nov. 23) Vardal, Norway to Croper, Wisc. via Chicago, light pink envelope with sharp "Vardal, 23/11, 1869" cds and large "3" due handstamp, endorsed "Via Bremen", Christiana (11.26) transit, Hamburg (11.27) backstamp; carried by HAPAG Line Cimbria from Hamburg Dec. 1st to New York arriving Dec. 15th closed bag to Chicago, "Chicago, Direct, Dec 17" exchange cds and matching bold "26/U.S. Notes" two-line depreciated currency handstamp, original letter accompanies; opened on three sides for display, some edge wear, Very Fine and scarce Chicago depreciated currency use.

1870 (Oct. 15) New York N.Y. to Reichenberg, Austria, folded cover endorsed "Circular" bearing 2¢ red brown (146) pair tied by NYFM circle of wedges (TR-W6) overpaying the 3¢ NGU direct circular rate, red "Paid All" straightline handstamp, carried as endorsed by Guion Line Wisconsin from New York Oct. 19th to Queenstown arriving Oct. 29th, Austria (11.1) arrival backstamp; 1870 docketing across face, minor bottom edge toning, Fine and scarce use.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Weiss recorded only five covers bearing this cancel, this was not one of them. This is the only example not bearing an 1869 issue franking. In 1870, a special "book-packet" up to 1 oz. rate was introduced for circulars and charged 2¢ for direct mail and 3¢ for closed.

Dec 11" duplex with four-bar grid cancel ties 1¢ blue (145) on 1¢ postal card (UX1), bold red "New York, Dec 13" exchange cds, carried by NGL Line Donau from New York Dec. 13th to Bremerhaven arriving Dec. 25th, 1873, Very Fine and choice, ex-Gundel.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THE 2¢ POSTAL CARD RATE TO GERMANY.

An additional article effective December 1, 1873 provided for a 2¢ rate for postal cards but limited the exchange to direct mail by Bremen or Hamburg.

1875 (Jun. 19) Havana, Cuba to Schönbach dei Löbau, Saxony, cover bearing Cuba 50c green pair cancelled by blue "P.C" in circle handstamps, some gum toning, blue merchant "Alvarez Valle y Ca, Habana, Jun 19, 1875" double-oval flap seal, black "New York, Jun 26" exchange cds and matching "UNPAID" framed and "7" cent due handstamps, carried by NGL Line Rhein from New York Jun. 26th to Bremerhaven arriving Jul. 8th, black "Aus Westindien/über Newyork." framed handstamp and updated with blue crayon "80" pfennings due, Schönbach (7.9) arrival backstamp, ex-Kouri; with 1989 P.F. certificate.

ONE OF ONLY 7 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE BREMEN "AUS WESTINDIEN/ÜBER NEWYORK." HANDSTAMP.

Cuba stamps were not recognized since it did not become a member of the U.P.U. until May 1, 1877.

This cover is important because it shows postage due in the 1875 single German currency (1 Mark = 100 pfennings). Since it arrived after the General Postal Union became effective on July 1, 1875, the U.S. transit fee was crossed out. Postage due was 50 pf. Direct Mail rate plus 30 pf US Transit = 80 pfennings (8 sgr in old currency).
