1870 (Nov. 4) Paris to Nice, folded formular letter postmarked "Paris, R. de Strasbourg, 4 Nov. 70" double circle postmark, franked with 20c Empire Lauré tied by numeral "14" star cancel, backstamped "Nice, 10 Nov. 70" arrival postmark, Very Fine, carried by the Ville de Châteaudun.

1870 (Nov. 6) Paris to Turkey, folded printed formular letter to Constantinople, postmarked "Paris, R. Taitbout, 6 Nov. 70" double circle postmark and franked with 40c Empire Lauré tied by numeral "22" star cancel, backstamped "Marseilles, 12 Nov. 70" transit and "Constantinople, 19 Nov. 70" arrival postmark of French Post Office in Turkey, Very Fine and rare, carried by the Gironde.

1870 (Nov. 6) Paris to Arthon, folded Gazette des Absents No4 postmarked "Vincennes, 6 Nov. 70" double circle postmark and franked with 20c Empire Lauré tied by numeral "4290" losange cancel, backstamped indistinct arrival postmark, Very Fine, a nice cover from this Outer-Suburban Post Office, carried by the Gironde.

1870 (Nov. 7) Paris to United States, folded Gazette des Absents No. 5 to San Francisco, postmarked "Paris, 7 Nov. 70" double circle, cover sent via London & New York with red London transit and New York "2 Cents" credit handstamp, original adhesives (top right & bottom left) tied by London transit and San Francisco arrival postmarks, the stamps were then removed as the recipient could not be found and scarce San Francisco "Advertised 1" straight line applied where the stamp at the top right had been originally placed, interesting Red Cross label used to seal cover and "San Francisco Advertised, Dec. 14" cds applied on reverse, name of recipient crossed out, Very Fine, ex-Steinway.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A FASCINATING AND UNIQUE USAGE CARRIED BY THE GIRONDE.

These advertised markings were used on unclaimed mail for which the recipient could not be found. The letters were advertised in the local newspaper and a one cent charge was applied for this service.

1870 (Nov. 8) Paris to Uruguay (Jettisoned Mail), folded printed Orlandi Formular letter to Montevideo, postmarked "Paris, Rue D'Enghien, 8 Nov. 70" double circle postmark and franked with 80c Empire Lauré (defective) tied by numeral "4" star cancel, handstamped red boxed "P.P.", red "London, 30 NO 70" transit, cover slightly aged, Fine, carried by the Daguerre and part of the jettisoned mail.
Estimate    $4,000 - 6,000.

1870 (Nov. 8) Paris to Elbeuf (Jettisoned Mail), folded Dépêche-Ballon No. 4 postmarked "Paris, R. St. Domque St. Gn 58, 8 Nov. 70" double circle and franked with 20c Empire Lauré tied by numeral "20" star cancel, backstamped "Elbeuf, 1 Dec. 70" arrival postmark, Very Fine, carried by the Daguerre.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

"Le Daguerre" was piloted by Sylvain Jubert with a freight of 270 kgs, landing later the same day (12 Nov.) with the pilot, passengers & mail all captured - the latter released after conclusion of the war - one mail bag was jettisoned, recovered by the French Guard at Ferrières and transmitted with arrival postmarks from the 20th of November to the 29th.

1870 (Nov. 8) Paris to Jonzac, folded "Correspondance Havas" (French Edition) postmarked "Paris (60), 8 Nov. 70" double circle tying 20c Cérès with mute Star cancel, no arrival marking as this mail was captured by the Germans, Very Fine, carried by the Daguerre.

1870 (Nov. 9) Paris to Baden, Switzerland (Jettisoned Mail), folded Gazette des Absents No. 6 postmarked "Paris, Pl. De La Bourse, 9 Nov. 70" double circle and franked with 20c Empire Lauré + 10c Cérès (10c small perf fault) tied by numeral "1" star cancel, sent in error to England with bold two line handstamp tying 20c "PAID ONLY, TO ENGLAND", backstamped red "London, 30 NOV. 70" transit, notation at bottom "prière de faire suivre en cas d'absence" and addressed at top to a hotel in Basel, backstamped "Basel, 4.XII.70" arrival postmark, red manuscript crayon "60" at left, Very Fine and an intriguing usage, carried by the Daguerre.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

St. Lazare, 9 Nov. 70" double circle, franked with two 20c Empire Lauré tied by two strike of numeral "2" star cancel, backstamped Italian railway transit of Nov. 28 and "Milano, 29 Nov. 70" arrival postmark, slightly refolded at bottom, F.-V.F., a scarce destination, carried by the Daguerre.
