1870 (Dec. 1) Paris to Germany, folded formular letter addressed to Général Ladmirault, Aix la Chapelle (Aachen) in Prussia, postmarked "Paris, R. d'Amsterdam, 1 Dec. 70" double circle, franked with 20c + 40c Empire Lauré tied by two strikes of numeral "18" star cancels, no arrival backstamp as usual, Very Fine and scarce, carried by the Franklin.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

During the Franco-Prussian War, Général Ladmirault was placed in command of the IV Corps of the Army of the Rhine, taking part in the battles of Mars-la-Tour and Saint-Privat; during the latter he repulsed the German attack at Amanvillers. After the capitulation of the Bazaine's army however, he became a Prussian prisoner of war.

1870 (Dec. 2) Paris to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, folded cover postmarked "Paris, Pl. de la Bourse, 2 Dec. 70" double circle postmark and franked with 80c Empire Lauré tied by numeral "1" star cancel, backstamped blue "Rio de Janeiro, 14 Jan. 71" arrival postmark, small unnoticeable erosion hole to left of address, Extremely Fine and rare, carried by the Franklin, ex-Henry Gibson.
