Put onto the multi contract Buffalo to Albany route on February 23rd circa 1850. Carried through to Albany for transfer to the Western Railroad route 478 for Worcester and Boston.

(New York Central Railroad) Boston & Albany R.R., May 9, clear strike of red cds and matching two strikes of open circular grid cancel ties 5¢ red brown (1), four large even margins, on cover to Salisbury Conn., endorsed "Via Housa. R.R." at bottom left; light stain spot, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Put onto the two contract Boston to Albany routes on May 9th circa 1850. Manuscript "Via Housa R.R." and addressed to Salisbury, carried through to Pittsfield for the 37 miles south to Salisbury on the Housatonic Railroad.

(Northern Railroad) Northern R.R. N.Y., Oct. 8, double-circle datestamp ties 3¢ experimental orange brown (11A var.) rich color, on buff cover to Vergennes Vt., "Oct. 1851" docketing at left; backflap tear and tape stain at bottom, still Very Fine and rare, Rarity VIII, ex-Waghsal.

A LOVELY COMBINATION OF THIS SCARCE SHADE WITH A RARE ROUTE AGENT MARKING.

Both Remele and Towle only saw examples with manuscript day of month instead of slugs. Addressed to Vergennes on Lake Champlain and carried east to Rouse's Point on Route 1252. Probably routed south by steamboat on Route 1110 to Burlington and then 23 miles by post road south to Vergennes.

Lot 4341    

(Northern Railroad) Northern R.R., July 23, well-struck route agent's double-circle datestamp with day in manuscript and two strikes of matching "PAID" in rectangle handstamps cancel 3¢ dull red (11A), large margins to clear at right with brilliant color, on circa 1852 folded cover to Concord N.H., Very Fine, a rare route agent marking, Rarity VIII; with 2011 P.F. certificate.
Towle No. 101-B-1    Estimate $500 - 750.

Envelope put onto Route 1252 on July 23rd circa 1852. Probably carried east to Rouses Point for transfer onto Route 301 on the Vermont Central Railroad and east to Concord.

Simpson-Alexander list this as Rarity 10 (unique), however we note two other examples, one offered in the prior lot (lot 4340) and one other in the Wyer collection.
