(South Side Railroad) South Side R.R., Mar 11, blue route agent cds on folded letter datelined "Petersburg, March 10th 1853" to Farmville Va. bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) tied by manuscript, Very Fine and rare, Rarity IX, ex-Hannen.

Put onto Route 2443 and carried 69 miles west to Farmville.

Lot 4483    

(Valley Railroad) Pleasant Valley Depot, purple station cds overstruck by matching unlisted "Pleasant Valley, Valley Railroad" oval handstamp on 1¢ postal card (UX5) to Harrisbonburg Va., datelined "Pleasant Valley Va Oct 28 1878", Very Fine and rare unlisted Valley Railroad oval.

Chartered in February 1866 the Valley Railroad intended to connect the Baltimore & Ohio at Harpers Ferry to the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad. A section of the one between Harrisburg and Staunton was completed by 1877 using convict labor but by 1878 construction was stopped at Lexington. The line was taken over by the Baltimore & Ohio in 1881 as their Valley Branch but in the Postmaster General's Annual Report of 1878 neither company were listed as having a contract on the Harrison to Staunton section of the road.

Carried outside the mails 5 miles north having received the Station Agent cds and an unlisted undated "VALLEY RAILROAD" in the same ink.

"Feb. 21", clear blue cds strike with date in manuscript and matching large "5" cent due rating on blue folded letter datelined "Liberty 21 Feby. 1855" to Richmond Va.; vertical file fold well away from markings, Very Fine and rare, Rarity IX, ex-Towle, Hannen.

Put onto Route 2022 and carried 25 miles east to Lynchburg for Richmond.

(Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad) Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad, Mar 11, sharp strike of red route agent cds on blue folded cover from the Ludlow Beebee correspondence to Philadelphia bearing 5¢ red brown (1) horizontal pair, large margins all around, brilliant shade and crisp impression, each cancelled by manuscript "X"; tiny scissors-cut at bottom between stamps, cover with tear at top that does not detract, Extremely Fine, Rarity V, ex-Picher, Gross.

A CHOICE 1847 ISSUE WILMINGTON & RALEIGH RAILROAD USE.

Probably originating from Charleston circa 1848 and put onto Route 2817 carried by steamboat and railroad the 340 miles to Weldon. Transferred via Richmond and Washington to Philadelphia.

Put onto Route 4492 at Stephensons on December 3rd 1860 to Berryville, located two miles south of St. Johns Run on the Baltimore & Ohio Rail Road. Carried 27 miles east to Harpers Ferry for transfer west on Route 3207.
