(Madison & Indianapolis Railroad) "Via M & I. R.R.", straightline directional handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Branch of the State Bank of Indianapolis - Madison 4 Oct. 1851" bearing 3¢ orange brown (10A) tied by "Madison, Ind. Oct 6" cds to Indianapolis, Ind.; file fold crease through 3¢ Fine and rare railroad directional handstamp.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The directional stamp was applied by the bank before being put into the Madison post office. The instruction was unnecessary as the letter would have been bagged for the post office car anyway.

(Michigan Central Railroad) Mic. Central R.R., Mic. Oct 24, route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A) on buff cover to Lockport N.Y., Very Fine, Rarity VII.

The first contract with the Michigan Central Rail Road was in July 1841 for the first 30 miles of the route between Detroit and Ypsilanti. It was not until 1852 that the full 282½ miles was completed to Chicago and contracted as Route 3703 at $28,250 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays.

Put onto the Michigan Central on the course of Route 3703 for Detroit.

(Michigan Southern Railroad) Mich. Southern R.R., Jun 4, bold blue route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A), additional pencil cancel on buff cover to Elkhart, Indiana; stamp oxidized, a Very Fine strike, Rarity VII.

Put onto Route 13018 on June 4th circa 1855 carried on the route to Elkhart located 101 miles east of Chicago and 143 miles west of Toledo.

The first contract with the Michigan Southern Rail Road was in July 1848 on the 68 miles of completed track between Monroe and Hillsdale. By 1854 the line had merged with the Northern Indiana & Chicago and renamed the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Rail Road. In July 1854, Route 13018 of 242 miles was contracted between Toledo and Chicago at $36,300 a year for a twice daily service excluding Sundays. The Route Agent's date stamps continued to be worded for the Michigan Southern.

Envelope put onto Route 9030 on June 30th circa 1858 and carried east to St. Louis. Route Agents were not appointed until 30th June 1857 and served until 30th June 1859.
