1862 (Feb. 27) Burnside Expedition N.C. Island to Wayne, N.Y., red and blue Flag and Lady Liberty patriotic design (Bischel 4099) on soldier's letter cover entering mails with Philadelphia "U.S. Ship, 3cts" circular rating handstamp for incoming U.S.S. Naval mail, endorsed "Soldiers Letter, N.E. Pierson, Chaplain 89 N.Y.", original first four-pages of longer letter datelined "Feb 27 th 1862" with bad grammar but detailed description of war including the North Caroline Expedition, Zoaves killing Rebel captives, decapitation by grapeshot, troops killed and wounded, etc., with typed transcription; edge wear, reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F. Civil War patriotic use with excellent war content.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The sender, mentions being stationed at the Provisional Burnside Expedition Camp at Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina on Feb. 22nd, and then arriving at an Island he does not know the name of, but we presume to be Roanoke Island carried by the USS Louisiana that had some smokestack issues along the way. He mentions capturing 3,800 Confederates who we were transferred to Elizabeth Island for guarding.

1864 Richmond, Va. to San Francisco, Cal. Privately Carried Through the Lines, addressed to Mrs. Clara Crittenden in the hand of Confederate Captain James Love Crittenden covertly carried out of the Confederacy, entered the U.S. mails franked with 1861, 10¢ green (68, s.e. at right) tied by blue "Baltimore Md., Jan 6" cds, reverse with "San Francisco, Cal., Advertised, Feb 18" cds, original letter datelined "Grenada, Miss, Oct 4, 1863" (now in the Clements Library); cover tears and some wear, F.-V.F., ex-Walske.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Banks Division, Apr 29, blue Army field post cds cancels 3¢ pink (U36) lettersheet to Marietta, Ohio, used as an envelope to enclose a letter, F.-V.F. and rare U36 lettersheet use, ex-Malpass, Graham.

Congressional Free Franks of Confederate Members, group of 32 members who served either as Confederate Officers or Members of the Confederate Congress including Thomas Lanier Clingman, William Robert Winfield Cobb, Martin Jenkins Crawford, James Fletcher Epes, James Charles Faulkner, Henry Stuart Foote, Lucius Jeremiah Gartrell, John Adams Gilmer, Charles Hays, etc.
