Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ olive green, horizontal pair, large margins to barely in at bottom, canceled by smudged manuscript marks (ink ties through envelope that is visible on the inside), paying required C.S.A. postage on 1861 cover to Col. Lomax, 3rd Regt. Ala. Volunteers, Norfolk Va., blue "Southern Express Co. Montgomery Ala. Dec. 12" double-circle datestamp and bold matching "Montgomery Alabama Southern Express" in circle; faint toning, Very Fine, ex-Engel, Brandon; with 1973 P.F. certificate.

ONE OF FIVE RECORDED COVERS FROM THE SOUTHERN EXPRESS COMPANY IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.

Colonel Tennent Lomax was a resident of Montgomery commissioned as a Lt. Colonel at the outbreak of war leading the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. His regiment was ordered to defend the Naval Yard at Norfolk Va., which was held by Confederate forces until May 1862. During this period at Norfolk, his wife sent him express mail from Montgomery to his regiment. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862. He was later killed at the Battle of Seven Pines on June 1, 1862.

5. Dec. 22, 1861, Montgomery Ala. Lomax correspondence to Norfolk Va., 10¢ #2b, ex-Emerson, Antrim, Wiseman, Kilbourne.
