1861, 24¢ steel blue, used with 5¢ red brown (75), tied by grid cancels and matching "Clyde, N.Y. Aug 6, 1862" double-circle datestamp, over manuscript rating from original mailing with "Clyde N.Y. Jul 19, 1862" double-circle on cover to U.S.S. St. Louis, care of U.S. Consul, Madeira, New York red "Returned for / Postage" two-line handstamp, red "New York 'Paid' Aug 9" exchange cds with magenta "21" cent credit to G.B., carried by HAPAG Saxonia from New York Aug. 9th to Southampton arriving Aug. 20th, red Calais (8.22) transit cds ties both stamps, red London Paid (8.23) transit cds and bold "P.D." framed handstamp, Portugal bold dark blue "80" reis due handstamp, manuscript "Postage in Madeir, 8cts" on reverse; reduced slightly at right and some edge wear, 24¢ slightly affected from top edge placement, Very Fine.
