ACCORDING TO FRED GREGORY, THIS MIXED-FRANKING COVER FROM HAWAII IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THE 1857 5¢ KAMEHAMEHA III SECOND PRINTING ON THIN WHITE WOVE PAPER, AND THE LATEST USE OF THE "HONOLULU*U.S. POSTAGE PAID" CDS.
This cover was carried on the schooner "Vaquero" that departed Honolulu June 27th 1857 with two mail bags datestamped at Honolulu on June 27th. It returned with a broken mast and sailed again on June 30th with additional mail. It is interesting to note that five of the recorded 5¢ on 13¢ surcharge covers were carried on this mail voyage. The "Vaquero" arrived in San Francisco on July 16th, and mail for Panama was datestamped on July 20th.
