Lot 2718

1923, 1¢ Franklin, rotary press printing, perf 10, well centered, tied by "Washington D.C., Oct 17, 1923" First Day of Issue slogan machine postmark on picture post card to Sherrill, N.Y., Very Fine, ex-Fisher.
Scott No. 581    $6,000.

THE UNIQUE FIRST DAY OF ISSUE OF THE 1923 1¢ FRANKLIN PERF 10 ROTARY PRESS PRINTING CANCELLED BY THE PHILATELIC AGENCY IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Once the precanceled form of this issue became known to the collecting public, a drive was mounted, led by Philip Ward, to have the Philatelic Agency release the stamps unprecanceled. The agency complied and on October 17th 1923 they issued the unprecanceled version of the stamp. Despite collector interest, this is the only Agency First Day that has been found and surprisingly it is completely non-philatelic.

Realized: $1,500
