Lot 3085 o

1857, 1¢ blue, type II, plate 2, extraordinarily well centered, deep rich color with a proof-like impression on fresh paper, canceled by town cds, an Extremely Fine gem, ex-Kirke; with 1980 P.F., 2004 and 2012 P.S.E. certificates. latter graded (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $2,500).
Scott No. 20    $275.

A GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1¢ TYPE II 1857 ISSUE, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY THE P.S.E. - THE HIGHEST GRADED AWARDED SHARED BY ONLY TWO OTHERS.

The 1¢ type II 1857 issue is a surprisingly difficult stamp to find in superb condition. The highest grade awarded by the P.S.E. in mint or used condition is XF-Superb 95, with only five total examples (3 used, 2 mint). For the second most common stamp after the Type V, this shows how difficult it is to find this stamp in truly outstanding condition.

Realized: $3,250
