1867 Grilled Issues

Lot 239

1867, 3¢ rose, partially erased C. grill, beautiful deep shade, prominent grill clearly showing the additional four vertical columns grill points at left, tied by quartered cork cancel duplexed with "Richmond Va. Nov 21" cds on circa 1867 bright orange cover to New York City, Very Fine, ex-Sheriff; with 1982 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 83 var.; $4,500 on cover    Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE PARTIALLY ERASED C GRILL VARIETY, BELIEVED TO BE THE FINEST OF THE FEW KNOWN ON COVER.

In a few areas of the C Grill, the points between grills were insufficiently planed away or erased when the A Grill was converted to the smaller C Grill. As a result, some of the stamps from the C Grill have grills measuring approximately 18 mm wide. These so-called Partially Erased C Grill stamps are very rare, and the cover offered here is regarded as the finest example of the few known on cover. It is also a very early use of the C Grill (EDU Nov. 16, 1867).

Scott footnote indicates $4,500.00 value for this variety on cover.

Realized: $1,700
