1851, 24¢ Washington essay, by Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., in black, complete design proof and frame only progressive essay on India, mounted on card (approximately 45x101mm overall), showing complete design as issued at top (37TC) and frame only progressive die below, engraver layout line visible around each die, reverse with pencil "From Jos. E. Ralph, J.M. Bartels", severed between and hinged together, Very Fine, listed as a footnote in Scott catalog below 37-E2 but unpriced.

THE UNIQUE REJOINED COMPOUND DIE PROOF OF THE 1857 24¢ WASHINGTON COMPLETE DESIGN AND THE PROGRESSIVE FRAME ONLY.

Only two other examples of the frame only die essay are known (R.A. Siegel Lakeshore and Hulme sales). One of these examples is of similar state as the example in this proof, while the other example differs in the engraver layout lines and burnishing.
