1861, 3¢ rose, tied by "Washington, D.C., Jan 20, 1862" on colorless embossed Flag patriotic cover to Victory Hills, N.Y., cds, the cover features a skillfully executed hand drawn pen illustration showing "Company E., 22nd Regiment, Reserve on Picket", the illustration depicts Soldier Scene, one Holding Turkey, with Contraband, Hut and Forest in Background, the embossed flag is incorporated into the design with the flagpole sloping into hut, additionally the original enclosure included with dual panel Magnus patriotic design showing Flag and Locomotive Scene and New York View, datelined "Camp Augner, Upton Hill, Fairfax County, Virginia, Jan 18th, 1862", letter with interesting content regarding the cover illustration…"Eliza, this picture on this envelope is the picture of our Company reserve while on pickets. That Fellow that holds the turkey in his hand is myself, and that other fellow that holds his hand up to his nose is a contraband. Don't you think he looks like one?", Extremely Fine.

Contrabands were slaves who escaped to Union lines during the Civil War. When the conflict began, the North's aim was primarily to preserve the Union, not to end slavery. Slaves who escaped to Union lines early in the war were often returned to their masters.
