New York, N.Y., 1846, 5¢ black on bluish, signed "ACM" connected, Position 15, large margins to in at left, two natural pre-print paper creases, tied by bold red circular grid cancels, matching "Paid" and "New-York, Jan 17" cds on blue 1850 folded letter to Philadelphia Pa.; stamp removed and replaced downward, Fine, The latest recorded legal use of a New York provisional by 2½ years; with 2012 P.F. certificate not mentioning stamp movement.
Scott Nos. 9X1    Estimate $500 - 750.

The 5¢ New York Provisional issue was essentially demonetized at this point in time. The clerk probably figured that the New York Post Office had received 5¢ for the stamp, so he treated it as he would have in 1847 as prepaid.

Realized: $400
