Hawaii, 1857, King Kamehameha III, 5¢ manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red, position 15, Type I (Clark) numeral manuscript with long flag and showing part of flag from adjoining stamp at left, good to large margins all round, no gum, excellent color, Very Fine, ex-Aall & Geisler; with 1972 A.P.S. and 2022 P.S.E. certificates. Scott Nos. 7 $7,000.
The 5¢ provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5¢ stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. New supplies of the 5¢ stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857.
