Confederacy, Aiken's Landing, Va., Aboard the CSS Schultz, pencil written letter datelined "Aiken's Landing, James River, Va. May the 8th, 1864" stating "We have been detained much longer than we expected when I wrote to You from City Point, but our boat-the Schultz- came down last night and we will start up to Richmond in a few hours", with cover addressed to St. Louis, Mo. and franked with 1861 3¢ Rose (65, nick at left), tied by large segmented cork with matching "Old Point Comfort, Va. May 18/" (1864) double circle postmark, Very Fine and rare.

ACCORDING TO HARRISON THIS IS THE ONLY KNOWN EXAMPLE FROM THIS UNUSUAL DETENTION CENTER, WRITTEN ABOARD A CSA SHIP AND DISCUSSED IN HARRISON'S BOOK, "PRISONERS MAIL FROM THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR" ON PAGE 69.

Capt. John J. Miller, 12th Regt. Mo. Guard (Confederate Cavalry) was recently paroled and aboard the C.S.S. Schultz was being returned to Richmond.
