1867, 2¢ black, Z. grill, perfectly centered with enormous margins by any standards, full and clearly defined grill showing all of the points, lightly cancelled by cork cancel, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Puliafito; with 1995 P.F. & 2008 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $10,000).Scott No. 85B $1,200.
A SUPERB GEM WHICH RANKS AMONG THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES OF THE 1868 2¢ Z. GRILL. AN OUTSTANDING STAMP DESTINED FOR THE FINEST COLLECTION. ONLY 2 EXAMPLES ARE GRADED HIGHER BY THE P.S.E. (BOTH 98).
Narrow spacing on the plates used to print the Black Jacks did not provide enough room between subjects for the large Perf 12 gauge holes. As a result, most Black Jack stamps have perfs touching the design on one or more sides. The rarity of four-margin copies significantly increases when the Z. Grill is factored into the equation.
