1857, 1¢ blue, type IV, Position 7R1L (recut state of type I), recut once at bottom, showing the double transfer in "Postage" and complete design at top and bottom with nearly complete plumes, full beautifully balanced margins and perfect centering, full perforations all around and Post Office fresh, neat town cancel, an Extremely Fine gem, one of four examples to grade as such with no examples grading higher in any category, ex-Zoellner; with 1986, 1998 P.F. & 2008 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $8,000).Scott No. 23 $600.
ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE 1857 1¢ TYPE IV PERFORATED ISSUE. THE 1¢ PERFORATED RECUT STAMPS ARE SOME OF THE MOST DIFFICULT STAMPS TO FIND IN THIS SUPERB CONDITION.
Any example of Type IV perforated in this choice condition is rare--the existence of this desirable position, which produced the Type I imperforate (Scott 5) in its earlier pre-recut state, is truly remarkable.
