"A1" of Woodville, Miss., red advertising handstamp with manuscript rating on incoming folded letter, franked with 1851, 3¢ reddish orange brown (10) tied by "Alexandria, La., Oct 13" cds, letter with interesting content regrading plantation slaves…The children all appeared delighted with their trip up and all they have seen, and all the negroes appeared rejoiced to see them again…There is not a case of sickness now on the plantation. The negroes have all more or less had colds from unavoidable exposure during bad weather while I was absent but all are now well & at work…The negroes are all fat & healthy & in the finest spirits & rejoice at the prospect of making a fine crop. The whip is scarcely ever used because there is scarcely ever any necessity for it., Very Fine, a rare auxiliary marking and interesting slave letter.
