Hawaii - Kauai to Oahu Island Town Postmarks

Hawaii, (Maui) Wailuku Post Office, Hawaiian Islands, Oct 18, 1869, blue double oval date stamp (215, 1RRR) on reverse of cover to Springfield, Vt., franked with U.S. 1868, 10¢ yellow green, F. grill (96) tied by the rim of a duplex in S.F., Honolulu, Hawaiian-Islands, Oct 20 and red "San Francisco, Cal., Oct 31" transit cds's; cover with backflap added and repaired nice and tears at top, stamp faulty, F.-V.F., one of only eight recorded covers with the rare Wailuku double-oval ribbon-marker datestamp, ex-Twigg-Smith.

After the Honolulu straightline postmark, this mark is the next Hawaii postmark to incorporate a year date. We note another similar use from the same correspondence to John L. Chase at Springfield Vt. dated Aug. 2nd 1869.
