Canada, Montreal, Canada to London, England. 1839 folded letter with partial red "Montreal L.C., No 26 1839" cds, endorsed "double only…." & "p British Queen Steam Packet", red "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "37½" rate (double 18?¢ from Canadian border to New York), additional "Paid" handstamp with "9" just beneath (4 ½ per half ounce x 2) and both rates crossed through, manuscript "2/" which probably represents double 8d private ship fee + 4d British inland from Gravesend to London to be collected from the addressee, reverse with red framed "Ship Letter Gravesend" handstamp, and "F DE 26, 1839" receiving cds, F.-V.F., there is no indication as what was charged for freight money, but this was definitely per the British Queen and was either collected or neglected somehow, departed New York 2-Dec. & arriving Gravesend (London) 26-Dec. Estimate $200 - 300.
