Hong Kong, 1897-1910 Hong Kong Mail with "Paquebot" Marks. 2 items; 1) German 10pf red postal card cancelled "Deutsche Seepost Ost - Asiatisch Zweiglinie 16 3 97", card off-loaded at Yokohama, outward terminus of German branch line, where "Yokohama Japan 17 Mar 97" transit cds (Bishop XI-22: 1894-1905), and "Paquebot" (Hosking 3462: 1897-1906, so a very early use) marking applied. Also on front: "Hong Kong Mr 29 97" transit cds, and "Dornum (Ostfriesland) 28/4. 97" arrival cds. 2) US 2c Washington postal stationery envelope to Hong Kong, plus 6c Washington adhesive (Scott 336), tied by P.M.S.S.Co. hand-stamps, and earlier than recorded "Tenyo- Maru Sea Post 16.8.10" cds (Bishop XIII-29: 18.1.11 - 17.3.13). Also on front: "Paquebot" marking, appears to be Hosking 3464 (Yokohama - only recorded in 1909, scarcity D). On back: "General Post Office Hong Kong 12 Sp 10" (Proud type D84: 1902-11, but very seldom seen on cover, particularly as an arrival cds), Very Fine.Estimate $300 - 350.
