Treaty Ports, 1888 Swatow to U.S. Two covers to the United States, first is 1888 cover to New Jersey and 2nd is 1902 cover to Minnesota; 1) Envelope (minor opening damage) to Asbury Park, NJ, with QV 2c carmine (printed matter rate) cancelled by light straight-line "Swatow" with JA 5 above and 88 below (Proud type D4 Swatow cds, Webb Scarcity Guide RR: five to 10 examples recorded, although several more have since been seen). Combination of this cancel and printed matter usage would justify an RR rating. Carried by Belgic from Hong Kong, 10 Jan, to San Francisco, 2 Feb 1888. 2) Envelope (opening damage at left and on flap) with QV 10c blue cancelled "Swatow Au 29 02". Addressed to St. Paul, with "St. P. Minn. / St. Anthony __ Oct 13" arrival cds, purple "Forwarded" hand-stamp, address crossed out, and Syracuse, NY address added. Webb type Fi Swatow cds tentatively allocated to British sub-post office by Proud (type D3). "Victoria Hong Kong Au 30", "San Francisco Cal Oct 3?", and "Syracuse" back-stamps, Fine.
