(Depreciated Currency) Bewdley, England to Fort Scott, Kansas. 1863 cover with "Bewdley, Au 18, 63" cds and "3 Cents" debit handstamp to the U.S. for British inland, partial blue "U.S. Notes 29" in circle handstamp with matching "Chicago Am. Pkt., Oct 18, 24" cds" & oval "Held For Postage" handstamp, reverse with blue "Fort Scott Kan, Nov 7, 1863" receiving cds, manuscript "unclaimed" notation and "Returned to me June 16 - 1864 - I posted it again same day unpaid" at right, F.-V.F. Estimate $400 - 600.
This was processed through the Chicago exchange and rated for collection of 24 cents in gold or 29 cents in U.S. notes for a depreciated currency ratio of 1.208. Carried per Allen Line steamer "Jura" departing Liverpool 20 Aug, 1863 arriving Quebec 2-Sep-1863. Marked held for postage at Ft. Scott and returned to sender. The sender's notation on the cover that it was reposted the same day unpaid was most likely a note of explanation and sent under cover. A scarce combination of markings and usage.
