Confederate States: General Issues - 1862 2¢ Green

Lot 2951

Confederacy, 1862, 2¢ green. Margins close top and right, barely tied by grid cancel with no other postmark wrapper which is an adversity cover made from an unused Army Form (rations), addressed to Mrs. Mary Lomax, Cokesbury Abbeville Dis S.C., 2007 C.S.A. cert. notes minor scuffs on the stamp which are indeed trivial, Very Fine and rare.
Scott No. 3    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

The cover was never sealed along the edges which would eliminate the possibility of this being a standard drop letter. As a wrapper, this would have most likely held a newspaper or some other printed matter to allow for the 2¢ rate, and postmarks were not usually applied to such printed matter mail. This wrapper type cover was rarely saved and was usually discarded like current junk mail covers are discarded today. Most unusual usage.

Realized: $2,400
