U.S. Postal History: Western Express Covers - Idaho & Kansas Expresses

Lot 678

Salmon River & Nez Perces Express/Paid 50 Cents. Printed frank with 50¢ value on 3¢ pink entire to Yreka, Cal. with Wells, Fargo & Co. frank at top, cancelled by blue "Wells, Fargo & Co./Florence City" oval handstamp, bit of edge wear, almost Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

This 1861-62 express carried mail between the Salmon River and Nez Perces mines in Idaho to Walla Walla, Washington Territory, where Wells, Fargo & Co. provided connections to other locations; the service to the Idaho mines was probably provided by Wells, Fargo & Co. with the frank representing a surcharge (50c, 75c and $1.00 rates); this is an unusual usage, because almost all others are addressed to Oregon, the only other we have located with a Wells Fargo San Francisco office marking is addressed to the East Coast.

Realized: $850
