Small folded letter franked with U.S. 1861 3¢ rose in combination with C.S.A. 1861 5¢ green, both tied by a single "New-York/Apr 22" double circle postmark to Caldwell, N.C. via the exchange point at Norfolk, Va. with blue "Norfolk, Va./Apr 28, '61" double circle postmark, manuscript endorsement "Prisoners Letter"; C.S.A. stamp with gum stains, Very Fine.

Letter, datelined "New York, Governor Island, April 21st 1862", includes "I was taken at the Newbern battle… " and "… direct your letter to Fort Columbus New York Harber [sic].".
