Vogel Western Cover Collection - California Express Covers (W Companies)

Lot 275

Wells Fargo & Co./Downieville (Sierra) Aug 29. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) on 1864 3¢ pink entire with Lamping & Co.'s Express printed frank (posthumous Wells Fargo use), A. Daneri correspondence to San Francisco, 1866 docket, light foxing and indicium partly oxidized, F.-V.F., ex-Toaspern.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

A. P. Lamping operated between Marysville and Downieville as the successor to Langton's Pioneer Express after Samuel Langton was accidently killed. Lamping purchased Langton's Yuba River business from Langton's family on November 21, 1865. Lamping sold out to Wells Fargo effective August 1, 1866. This cover is an interesting example of Wells Fargo continuing to recognize and use up the franks of an acquired company.

Realized: $105
