Wells Fargo & Co./Howlands Flat/Mar 11. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) and "Wells Fargo & Co./La Porte Mar 14" blue oval transit handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-9) on 1864 3¢ pink entire with black company frank, Samuel Hill correspondence to San Francisco, "1867" docket on the back, slightly reduced at right, Extremely Fine.

Wells Fargo covers with company transit handstamps from towns other than San Francisco are unusual. This cover was evidently delayed en route to La Porte. Howland's Flat was 12 miles northeast of La Porte and was the principal town in the Poker Flat gold mining district. It is now a ghost town.
