Mader Oregon Cover Collection - P-U Counties

Lot 703

Oregon Private Carriage - Politeness of Indian Joe Esq. Manuscript endorsement on lemon cover to O.C. Applegate, cover with vert fold & some edge wear, Fine and rare.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Lindsay Applegate was appointed Indian Agent at Fort Klamath (north of Klamath Lake and east of the Cascade Mountains from Jacksonville and Ashland Oregon) in 1865. There were no post offices east of the mountains in southern Oregon until the Linkville post office was opened near today's Klamath Falls in 1871. Messages and mail between Fort Klamath and the towns on the other side of the Cascade Mountains were sent by courier - sometimes military and sometimes Indians were hired. Most of the surviving mail is between Lindsay Applegate and his brother, Jesse Applegate. Some of the privately carried mail is from the mid to late '70s since the Fort Klamath post office wasn't opened until 1879.

Realized: $95
