Wells, Fargo & Co's Express/Sonora. Blue oval handstamp tying 1857, 3¢ dull red (scissor separated) on cover to San Francisco with black company frank at top; some cover edge wear at right, F.-V.F., Wells, Fargo & Co. franks printed on non-government envelopes are extremely rare, and the lack of an indicium necessitated the use of a stamp to comply with the government regulation that all express-carried letters have proper postage applied even though the letters never entered the postal system.
