Lot of 18 used and four unused covers all but one with Semi-Official Imprints, one folded cover franked with 1861 5¢ green (four large margins) tied by "Richmond, Va." cds with letter written on Official "Confederate States/General Post Office Department/Auditor's Office" stationery, letter written by Joseph M. Myers to his brother with fascinating contents describing the preponderance of clerks from Virginia in the Office and the talk of an appointment amongst all the statesSemi-Official Covers include:
Adjutant Inspector General's Office, legal size cover without postal markings addressed to "Brig. Gen. E.G. Lee, Richmond, Va." (Edwin G. Lee, was appointed Brigadier General on September 20, 1864 and subsequently sent to Canada on secret service for the government.)
Second Auditor's Offices, four covers, two with manuscript imprints & two with printed imprints (Dietz types VI & VIa), one of the printed & one manuscript with original enclosure
Executive Department, three covers with manuscript imprints of the Executive Department including one initialed "J.L." of John Letcher, Governor of Virginia, postmarked "Richmond, Va." cds straight line "Paid" handstamp and pencil "2" rate (mostly erased) on drop usage to "Thomas H. Howard M.D., Genl. Ransoms Brig. Hospital, near nine mile road, three miles from Richmond, Va.", second initialed "J.R.T." of John Randolph Tucker (Attorney General) used from Richmond with manuscript "15" triple rate to Powhatan
Medical Director's Office, two covers, first 1864 cover with 1863-64 10¢ blue tied by Charlotte, C.H., Va./Jun. 23 blue cds & addressed to the Medical Director in Richmond with manuscript notation on front of cover, "Query, is the Richmond Post Office still standing?", included is original enclosure in which sender writes, "Is it worthwhile for me to send you more letters by Flag of Truce?", second cover with manuscript imprint of the "Med.(ical) Director's Office", addressed to Fair grounds Hospital in Raleigh, N.C. (also known as General Hospital #7)
Ordnance Offices, including legal size cover without postal markings and shows the "Department" misspelling with manuscript endorsement at left, "Contracts with Negroes"
Treasury Department, one cover with "Treasury Office of Virginia" stationery & plain cover franked with 1862 5¢ blue, horiz. pair (7) addressed to "Col. John Quincy Adams Nadenbousch, 2nd Regt. Va. Infantry, Genl. Jackson's Corp.", plus four unused envelopes
War Department, three covers with 5¢ frankings, one with #4 & two with #6
(Virginia) Executive Department, one legal size cover with all-over shaded design franked with 1863-64 10¢ blue tied by Richmond, Va. cds
(Virginia) Head Quarters/Virginia Forces, one legal size cover with Richmond markings to Bremo, Va.
