Hawley & Co.'s Express. Black shield handstamp clearly struck beneath "Paid" black straight line handstamp on stampless folded letter to Sacramento City, letter is headed "San Francisco Oct. 15/'50", Very Fine and choice, a lovely example of this rare marking, ex-Barkhausen and "Edwards", Cover illustrated in Nathan's Franks of Western Expresses (page 103).
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

This short lived company operated from 1849 to 1850 only, about a month after this letter was sent, the company was bought by J.M. Freeman, and became Freeman's Express.
