William DeWitt Alexander (1833–1913) was born in Hawaii as son of a missionary who was an educator, author and linguist in the Kingdom of Hawaii and Republic of Hawaii. He published books on Hawaiian History and later constructed maps as surveyor for the Territory of Hawaii, assisting the U.S. National Geodetic Survey.
