Transatlantic Mail to and from Canada

1859 (Dec. 31) Hamburg to Quebec, Canada via New York, buff cover with red "Hamburg Paid Dec 31" cds with matching "10" cent prepaid rating h.s., carried by Hapag Line Teutonia from Hamburg Jan. 3 to New York arriving Jan. 26, red "N. York Hamb. Pkt. Jan 27" exchange cds, Toronto (1.28) and Quebec (1.30) backstamp, minor ink erosion, some minor paper loss on back, Very Fine, a scarce Hamburg Treaty cover to Canada.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter prepaid equivalent of 10¢ for all transit fees to New York, where letter sent to Toronto. Letter forwarded to Quebec. Since no postage due was indicated in Canada, the recipient may have had the free frank privilege as government official.
