Transatlantic Mail from Great Britain (1848 to 1850)

1849 (Aug. 10) London, England to Washington, D.C., folded cover with red London (8.10) cds and manuscript "4/" shilling prepaid rating for quadruple packet rate, red manuscript "20" cent credit to U.S., carried by Cunard Line Canada from Liverpool Aug. 11 to New York arriving Aug. 25, New York red "Paid/Ship" overstruck with black strike, additional "Paid" in arc h.s. and magenta "96" cent prepayment restatement, F.-V.F., The only recorded letter bearing the "Paid/Ship" marking in both colors.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The purpose of the "Paid/Ship" marking is not really understood. It is found used infrequently from March 1849 until February 1859. New York marked 4 x 24¢ = 96¢ paid in magenta ink along with curved red handstamp "Paid".
