Transatlantic Mail to Italy

1847 (May 18) New Orleans, La. to Turin, Kingdom of Sardinia, folded letter from the Sardinian consul in New Orleans to the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Sardinia, with "New Orleans La. May 18" cds with "Paid" and "10" rating h.s., carried by Cunard Line Britannia from Boston Jun. 1 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 13, London (6.14) backstamp and "Detained for Postage" framed h.s., manuscript "2/3" prepaid rating after postage remitted, Boulogne (7.12) entry cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

London marked letter "Detained for Postage" and then "Returned for 2/3 Postage" to be paid before the letter would be forwarded beyond England. A notice was sent to New Orleans for the 2/3d owed. About four weeks later the payment was received and London forwarded letter, marking red oval P F to show letter paid to Sardinian frontier. Rate to Sardinian frontier through France included 1/- transatlantic packet fee plus 5d British transit and 10d French transit fees. No postage due was required since letter sent to government official.
