Transatlantic Mail from Mexico

1858 (Apr. 7) Laguna de Terminos, Mexico to Havre, France, folded letter with "Vera Cruz 7 April" oval backstamp, entered U.S. mails with "New Orleans La. Apr 11 1858" cds with "Steamship" circular h.s. with manuscript "44" cent due rating, "Boston Br. Pkt. 21 Apr" exchange backstamp with "20" cent debit h.s. to France, carried by Cunard Line America from Boston Apr. 21 to Liverpool arriving May 4, red Havre (5.5) entry d.s., "8" decimes due h.s. updated with manuscript "24" decimes due rating, Very Fine, Uncommon French treaty letter from Mexico via U.S.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried privately to Veracruz and posted by forwarding agent H. D'Oleire Y Cie, then traveled by U.S. mail steamer "Tennessee" to New Orleans. Distinctive circular "Steamship" marking with damaged lower rim struck at New Orleans to indicate letter came in by steamship. Manuscript "44" in upper right corner indicated double unpaid rate by French mail from Mexico via U.S. Boston exchange office debited France 20¢. Havre originally marked letter for 8 decimes postage due in error, then corrected when an inspector assessed the weight at 8 grams (double rate) and letter from Mexico.
