Transatlantic Mail from Switzerland

Lot 604

1863 (Sep. 3) Zurich, Switzerland to Milwaukee, Wisc., blue cover with Zurich (9.3) cds, "Schweiz uber Baden" oval backstamp, black "Aachen, 4/9, 10cts" (9.4) debit cds to U.S., blue manuscript "5" updated to "3", carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Queenstown Sep. 6th to Boston arriving Sep. 16th, "Boston Br. Pkt. Sep 17" backstamp with "35" due h.s. and "In U.S. Notes" with "44" cents depreciated currency marking, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Swiss debited Prussia 3 kreuzer (10 rappen) for internal postage and sent letter to Baden. The SCHWEIZ/über/BADEN marking was applied on the Baden railroad to show letter transited Baden from Switzerland. Prussians debited U.S. 10¢ (in Aachen datestamp) and placed in the Prussian Closed Mails. Boston marked 35¢ due if paid in coin or 44¢ in depreciated greenback notes. Both 3 and 5 silbergroschen markings in blue ink appear to be in error as the Prussian transit fee was 2 sgr. and 2 sgr. was owed to Switzerland.

Realized: $350
